Description
The source of the South Branch is Lake St. Helen and it meanders through marshland and swamp area until it reaches Roscommon, MI. It gradually looks more like a trout stream until it nears Chase Bridge, where it turns into a top-flight fishing area. The Mason Tract provides excellent fly water for wading or boat fishing, and has been closed to all development. Brown trout dominate the lower portion of the river, however some rainbows and brook trout are taken. It is a popular recreation area with easy access sites at Roscommon, Chase and Smith Bridges for canoes, kayaks, and riverboats.
